The Ohio Society of "Crippled" Children (later known as Easter Seals) is formed.
Date: 1919
Edgar Allen, a businessman in Elyria, Ohio founds the Ohio Society of "Crippled" Children, which will later become the national Easter Seals Organization. After Allen's son dies following a streetcar accident, Allen is angry about the lack of adequate care available. His experience also makes him aware of the degree of invisibility and isolation that exists for children with disabilities, so he founds the society to fund care, rehabilitation, and legislative change. It will become a model for many other charitable organizations.
