The Washington State Legislature passes a new law allowing involuntary commitment for "violent sexual predators."
Date: 1990
Part of Washington's Community Protection Act allows the state to commit "mentally ill persons" for short-term, crisis-intervention treatment.
Additionally, the state's commitment system allows the state to involuntarily commit those who are found to be "sexually violent predators," where a "predator" is defined as a person charged with or convicted of a sexual violence crime.
